  • Hellerau Portraits Award finalist

For my Self Portrait 2010 , I have been selected as a finalist for the juried show of this years‘ theme- Escapism. The Background of the photograph stems from the archival short film titled These Days are gone , 2025. In reference to Nostalgia, high hope performance and big dreams youth can provide, there is still this hopelessness in my gaze. Wearing a showgirl headset in a black-and-white digital camera picture only further symbolizes the distance between the role I’m performing and the person underneath it — a showgirl’s promise of spectacle masking a gaze that has already stopped believing in the show. 2010 also marks a threshold moment: the front-facing camera and the selfie were just entering the cultural bloodstream, and self-portraiture was beginning its shift from private ritual to public performance. This image sits at that hinge — caught between an older, more intimate way of looking at oneself and the self-broadcasting era it was about to become.

Join me at the Motorhalle in Dresden for the exhibition opening of the Hellerau Portraits photography Award on the 6th of November.
